PSE&G Prepared for Heavy Rain, Strong Winds; Ready to Respond to Potential Power Outages
(NEWARK, N.J. – July 17, 2026) – PSE&G is closely monitoring forecasts calling for heavy rain and possible flooding, strong wind gusts and the potential for isolated tornadoes beginning tomorrow afternoon across parts of New Jersey. The company has activated its storm response plan, positioned additional crews and resources throughout its service territory, alerted customers, and is prepared to respond safely and efficiently should severe weather cause power outages.
PSE&G has additional line personnel, tree crews and support staff ready to respond if storms damage electric equipment or bring trees and branches onto power lines. Operations personnel will continue to monitor weather conditions and system performance throughout the event, allowing the company to adjust its response to best serve customers as conditions evolve.
“Our crews are prepared and ready to respond wherever they are needed,” said Paul Toscarelli, vice president of Electric Operations for PSE&G. “When severe weather moves through our service territory, our first priority is the safety of our customers, our employees and the communities we serve. We've positioned additional crews and resources across our service area so we can respond quickly as conditions evolve. If outages occur, we’ll work around the clock to restore service as quickly and as safely as possible. We first assess damage across our system to determine restoration process. From there, we make repairs in a way that safely restores power to the greatest number of customers as quickly as possible.”
Throughout the storm, PSE&G will remain in close communication with county and local emergency management officials and other public safety partners to help coordinate response efforts as needed.
Our customer-facing teams, including representatives in the call center and across the company’s communications channels, will remain active to provide updates to customers as conditions change. During the early July storms, we delivered over 10 million messages to customers, including pre-storm email messages on how to stay safe and prepare for a storm as well as text alerts and outage updates during the storm.
PSE&G encourages customers to prepare before the storm arrives:
- Charge cell phones and other essential electronic devices.
- Keep flashlights and fresh batteries readily available. Avoid using candles whenever possible.
- Secure or bring inside outdoor furniture, umbrellas, grills and other loose objects that could become airborne in strong winds.
- If you rely on electrically powered medical equipment, have a backup plan in place.
- Never touch or approach downed power lines. Always assume they are energized and dangerous. Stay at least 30 feet away and report them immediately.
- Use portable generators only outdoors and well away from windows, doors and vents to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
Customers who rely on electricity to operate life-sustaining medical equipment should notify PSE&G in advance by visiting pseg.com/life or calling 1-800-436-7734, and should have a backup plan in the event of an outage.
Customers can report outages and monitor restoration progress by:
- Using the PSE&G mobile app
- Visiting pseg.com/outagecenter
- Texting “OUT” to 4PSEG (47734)

PSE&G reminds customers that restoration work begins only after conditions are safe for crews to perform their work. During widespread outages, crews first assess damage across the electric system to determine restoration priorities before beginning repairs. Restoration efforts focus first on repairing damage that returns power to the greatest number of customers, while also restoring service to critical facilities such as hospitals, emergency response agencies and other essential infrastructure.
PSE&G will continue providing updates through its Outage Center, mobile app and social media channels as conditions warrant. If the severity of the storm or its impacts change significantly, the company will provide additional information as it becomes available.
