NJ Energy and Water Benchmarking Program

NJ Energy and Water Benchmarking Program

Attention: Owners and operators of commercial buildings over 25,000 square feet

(Publicly owned buildings such as schools and government buildings are exempt at this time).

Owners or operators of commercial buildings over 25,000 square feet must comply with the NJ Clean Energy Act's Energy and Water Benchmarking Law by October 2023. This law requires tracking and reporting of energy and water usage by using the US Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager tool.

As an owner or operator of a commercial building (over 25,000 square feet), you should have received the following letter from the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) notifying you about these requirements and what is expected from you. Click here or on the image below to view the full letter.

The requirements of this law are intended to measure and analyze your facility’s energy and water consumption and compare performance to similar buildings to identify opportunities to help reduce energy and water consumption and costs.
