PSE&G Urges Customers to Prepare for Dangerous Heat and the Possibility of Isolated Thunderstorms and Wind

Heat index above 100 degrees can place added stress on people and the electric system; customers should know how to stay informed if storms develop

(NEWARK, N.J. – August 7, 2026) – The heat index is expected to climb above 100 degrees and isolated thunderstorms with potentially high winds are possible later this afternoon, this evening and throughout the weekend. PSE&G is encouraging customers to take steps now to stay safe and be prepared in case severe weather causes scattered power outages. 

While today's storms are expected to be isolated, high winds and lightning can bring down trees and power lines with little warning. At the same time, extreme heat increases stress and demand on the electric system as customers rely on air conditioning throughout the day. PSE&G has positioned additional personnel ready to respond should outages occur. 

“Today's forecast is a reminder that summer weather can change quickly,” said Paul Toscarelli, vice president of Electric Operations for PSE&G. “Our crews prepare all year long, strengthening the electric system to better withstand damaging weather and enabling us to bring power back more quickly than in the past. The best time for customers to prepare is before storms develop. Taking a few minutes now can make a real difference later today and over the weekend.” 

Customers can prepare by knowing how to stay safe, connected and informed. 

Stay Safe 
Customers should remember to:

  • Stay at least 30 feet away from downed power lines and always assume they are energized. Report downed wires immediately by calling PSE&G at 1-800-436-PSEG (7734), using the PSE&G mobile app or visiting pseg.com. Call 911 if there is immediate danger.
  • Never operate generators inside homes, garages or other enclosed spaces because of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Consider staying indoors or finding air-conditioned spaces during the hottest part of the day whenever possible.
  • Check that phones, backup batteries and medical devices are fully charged before storms arrive.
  • Customers who rely on electricity to operate life-sustaining medical equipment should have a backup plan and notify PSE&G by visiting pseg.com/life or calling 1-800-436-7734 if they have not already done so.

Customers are also encouraged to manage their energy use during the hottest hours of the day by closing blinds and curtains and postponing energy-intensive activities, such as laundry or dishwashing, until later this evening when practical. Energy efficiency solutions are also available at myhomeenergy.pseg.com.  

If your air conditioning system isn't working properly, additional appliance service technicians and staff are available to respond to requests for air conditioning system support and repairs. Our call center is prepared to handle the potential for increased call volume.
