The Natural Gas Conversion Process

How much does it cost to convert to gas heat?

The cost of converting to natural gas depends on a variety of factors but will include at least some of the following:

  • Extending gas line from the street to your home (if needed)
  • Installing gas lines within your home (if needed)
  • Service connection upgrade (if needed)
  • Permit requirements
  • Your new natural gas furnace. Average cost: between $6,000 and $12,000
  • Other natural gas appliances, like a water heater, stove, clothes dryer, or pool heater (if needed)

How do I start the conversion process?

First, contact a licensed contractor to assess your home and determine what options are available. Whether you already have gas service (for stoves, water heaters, or dryers) or you're 100% oil for heat and electric for everything else, start by emailing one of our Energy Solutions Specialists.

Email (switchtogas@pseg.com) 24/7 with the completed form and an Energy Solutions Specialist will email you within two business days. The Energy Solutions Specialists will walk you through the conversion process and provide you the information you need to decide whether to switch from oil to gas, including:

  • Potential costs
  • Available rebates from the state
  • The estimated time PSE&G needs to complete the project

When you email us, we'll need:

  • Our Energy Solution Specialists or your contractor can help you to complete the Residential Application for Gas Service form.
  • Your PSE&G Account Number
  • Your home's approximate square-footage
  • A list of equipment/appliances that currently use gas, if applicable
  • A list of equipment/appliances you'd like to convert to gas, if applicable
  • The location of your home's oil or propane tank
  • Your new equipment's gas usage specifications - your plumber or HVAC contractor will have this information.

After you confirm your decision to convert to natural gas with an Energy Solution Specialist and submit your application, we'll send it to the Construction Inquiry Office. Once we process your application, we'll let you know what specific gas services you need. If you have questions, call the Construction Inquiry Office: 1-800-722-0256 (northern counties) or 1-800-832-0076 (southern counties).

I already have gas service for some appliances.

  • If you already use gas for home appliances, like a water heater, dryer, or stove, your plumber or HVAC contractor must give us the gas usage specifications of your new furnace and any other gas equipment you're adding. We use this information to confirm whether your current gas supply can handle the additional load. If not, PSE&G will add a gas main extension (if needed) plus a service connection upgrade and provide an estimated cost and schedule the excavation.
  • If your project requires permits, we'll let you know which ones you need. Your plumber or HVAC contractor can get the permits for you and tell you what they'll cost.
  • After your new equipment has been installed, call PSE&G's Construction Inquiry Office at 1-800-722-0256 (northern counties) or 1-800-832-0076 (southern counties) to schedule a safety inspection.
  • To fulfill permit requirements, your city or town may also require that one of their personnel inspect your new gas heater and water heater after their installation. Check your permit for contact information and instructions.

I need gas service, I'm totally oil.

  • We'll estimate the cost of adding gas mains on the street and the service to your home. Your home's location and size determine the excavation's size, length, difficulty and cost.
  • We'll let you know what permits you need. Your plumber or HVAC contractor can get the permits for you and tell you what they'll cost.
  • Before we dig, please mark private utilities, like septic or sprinkler systems, buried oil tanks, landscape lighting, or invisible fencing. PSE&G will verify the location of underground public utilities like water, sewer, phone, and cable.
  • New gas service line installations take between four to six weeks, depending on permit approval and weather. While the process requires digging, we work to minimize disruptions. We'll backfill what we dig, but you are responsible for restoring any landscaping.
  • Your plumber or HVAC contractor can install your new heating unit and any other gas appliances before, during, or after we install your gas service. When your HVAC contractor finishes the installation, call the Construction Inquiry Office at 1-800-722-0256 (northern counties) or 1-800-832-0076 (southern counties) to schedule a safety inspection and set the meter. Standard meters are usually installed on your home's outside.
  • To fulfill permit requirements, your city or town may also require that one of their personnel inspect your new gas heater and water heater after their installation. Check your permit for contact information and instructions.
