(NEWARK, N.J. – April 22, 2019)  Smart Energy Decisions recently honored Public Service Electric and Gas Co. with an Innovation Award for work done through the utility’s Hospital Efficiency Program to make 36 New Jersey hospitals more energy efficient.  The Innovation Award recognizes the individual and collective efforts of large electric power users, their suppliers, and their utilities in support of the energy transformation currently taking place.  The PSE&G Hospital Efficiency Program won in the utility partnership category for energy efficiency incentive programs.

“We started the Innovation Awards to shine a spotlight on customers and utilities that were doing great work in support of the energy transition,” said John Failla, founder and editorial director of Smart Energy Decisions. “Customer project awards were created to recognize outstanding projects in energy efficiency and renewable sourcing, while the utility partnership awards recognize utilities that are effectively enabling customer choice. We’re gratified at the growing industry engagement with the program and the quality of the entries across the board.”

The PSE&G Hospital Efficiency Program is a $199 million effort that funds the installation of energy conservation measures at hospitals and healthcare facilities in PSE&G’s New Jersey service territory. PSE&G provides upfront funding for the total cost of the energy efficiency improvements and interest-free, on-bill repayment for the hospital’s share of the costs, which is typically between 30 percent and 40 percent of the total.

The energy efficiency work at the 36 hospitals provides an average annual energy cost savings of more than $400,000 per hospital. The program has also saved enough kilowatt-hours of electricity to power more than 10,000 homes for a year and enough natural gas to supply more than 3,000 homes for a year. The initiative has garnered interest from almost every hospital in PSE&G’s service territory and currently has a waiting list of facilities that want to participate in the program.

“We’ve made a concerted effort to focus our energy efficiency efforts on customer groups like hospitals that can benefit greatly from energy efficiency improvements but often need upfront capital to get the project started,” said Karen Reif, vice president - renewables and energy solutions for PSE&G.  “We are honored that Smart Energy Decisions has recognized our efforts to help hospitals save energy and money by making critical energy efficient improvements to their facilities.”

PSE&G recently filed a Clean Energy Future proposal with the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities to make critical investments in clean energy and advanced technology that would position New Jersey as a national leader in energy efficiency and jump-start other clean energy priorities.  

“We’ve proposed extensive investments in energy efficiency, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, energy storage and advanced metering technologies,” said Reif.  “As part of these investments, PSE&G seeks to continue bringing the benefits of energy efficiency to even more hospitals and healthcare facilities as well as colleges and municipalities.”
