Making New Jersey Energy Strong
Built Stronger. Ready for What’s Next.
After Superstorm Sandy, we heard our customers loud and clear: we needed a system that could stand up to stronger, more frequent storms — and recover faster when the unexpected happens.
That's why we launched Energy Strong. Through Energy Strong I and II, we strengthened and modernized our electric and gas systems to better protect the communities we serve. The second phase wrapped up in 2025, with improvements touching every municipality in our electric service territory.
This wasn't just an upgrade. It was a commitment — to build smarter, reinforce what matters and prepare our infrastructure for the realities of today's weather and tomorrow's energy needs.
What changed — and why it matters
- 42 substations raised above Superstorm Sandy flood levels
Elevating critical equipment helps protect power during major storms and reduces the risk of widespread outages. - More than 1,500 smart switching devices installed
These wireless communication-enabled devices automatically reroute power when there's a problem, helping reduce the average customer interruption rate by 21%. - Advanced Distribution Management System upgrades
With real-time system data, we can detect issues faster, pinpoint problems more precisely and restore service more efficiently. - Six natural gas metering stations modernized and aging infrastructure replaced
Strengthening our gas system improves safety, reliability and long-term performance.
