Summer Energy Tips

Keep Cool While Keeping Your Cash

When it's hot outside, follow these tips to stay cool and save energy all summer long.

Install a Programmable Thermostat

Raise the setting to the highest comfortable temperature. You can save 3-5% on air conditioning costs for each degree you raise the temperature.

Close Doors to Unused Rooms

If you have central air, close doors and vents to unused rooms to reduce the area your system must cool.

Use Ceiling Fans

Use ceiling and other fans to provide additional cooling and better circulation.

Seal Holes and Cracks Around Windows and Doors

Use caulk and weather stripping to keep cool air in and warm air out.

Turn Off Power Sources

Many TVs, computers, and other electronics continue to draw power when hibernating in standby mode, or even when turned off. Plug electronics into a power strip which can be turned off when not in use.

Use Timers and Motion Detectors

For indoor and outdoor lighting, timers and motion detectors are a great way to make sure you only use lighting when you need it.

Replace Old Appliances

Replacing older, inefficient appliances with ENERGY STAR appliances will save energy and help to lower your cooling bills.

Install Whole-House Fans

Bring in cooler nighttime air and let Mother Nature cool your house.

Close Blinds, Shades and Drapes

Close blinds, shades and draperies facing the sun to keep out the sun's heat and help fans and air conditioners cool more efficiently.
